Modelling is a first impression business. So it becomes vital for models to showcase themselves & their calibre through relevant marketing tools that work on their behalf to make effective first impressions to potential clients before they get an opportunity to do so in person. One such important tool is a modelling portfolio.
1. What is a modelling portfolio?
A modelling portfolio is a collection of photographs, taken by a professional photographer that represents the model's range and artistry. These photographs go to modelling agencies and clients as a stepping stone to getting signed or getting work.
2. Why is it necessary?
A modelling portfolio represents your ability as a professional model and talent to agencies and clients. This diverse collection of 6-20 photographs that form your portfolio will put forward to the industry of what/who you can be and aid you to land great opportunities.
3. How to prepare?
A modelling portfolio would ultimately define you and your work as a model. So it is vital to put it together in the correct manner & follow the standards to enable the portfolio to reflect your accurate representation. To help you better, we will discuss some such standards to follow while getting ready for a modelling portfolio.
3.1. Use hair to your advantage
For your portfolio, hair is a crucial component. Make sure it's clean, well-groomed and subtly styled as per your face shape. Tie it up or let it down - your choice. Go with what enhances your features and helps you showcase your calibre as a model in different settings.
Additionally, as a modelling standard, body hair is often encouraged to get rid of for portfolio shoots. Hence, the following points come into consideration :
  • Male models need to be cleanly shaven. Models (both male & female) are required to get rid of body hair, especially on areas generally exposed whilst shooting(arms, legs etc.)
3.2. Flaunt all natural
Keep in mind portfolio shoots aim to identify the inner potential you hold as a professional. Hence, it's recommended not to wear any makeup to enhance your beauty because the primary focus is skill rather than beauty. Ensure to work on your skincare sincerely so that you feel confident undershoot conditions & put your best foot forward.
3.3. Less is more
For styling, the key is being simple yet effective. Agencies & potential clients will gauge your talent through the images of the portfolio and whether you are apt for the role they have to offer. Focus on projecting yourself as a professional model by wearing a simple white tank top or t-shirt (for male models), blue denim jeans and white sneakers or nude heels (for female models). Follow a neutral tone & avoid the colour black overall to be impactful.
Conclusion
Following the mentioned recommendations will allow you to step into the industry with the right resources in hand, i.e. a strong modelling portfolio that is true to you and your abilities & matches the set standards of the industry.
